When something has caught my attention, my mode of seeing changes, making everything except my subject unmemorable. I paint these images to include only that which my eye has fallen in love with. That is why these canvases are not rectangular, but have the shape of whatever it was that had drawn my attention.
Were my eye a camera, I'd remember these objects as they were, embeddded in their surroundings; but because my "directed perception" is selective, I remember only the artifact, the treasure, the personality that had captured my attention.
These paintings are objects in two senses: as themselves, and as the things they appear to be. But because their spatial and textural illusions occur upon a flat surface, and because they are constructed so as to "float" and inch from the wall, the effect is one of both solidity and insubstantiality.
